Genius Loci / Fanzine: Genius of Leeuwarden

Genius Loci - In classical Roman religion, a genius loci was the protective spirit of a place.

The project Genius Loci is the second phase of the artistic exchange project between Paphos (Cyprus) and Leeuwarden (The Netherlands). It is a part of the official programs of Leeuwarden European Capital of Culture 2018.
The first phase under the theme “In Search of Common Myth” was successfully executed in Paphos in 2017 involving 4 Dutch and 4 Cypriot artists. The project included 3 weeks artist in residence program, the interactive events with local citizens and the final exhibition at the Paphos Municipal Gallery.
In 2018, 4 Dutch and 4 Cypriot artists gathered again in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands for the second phase of the project. The theme “Genius Loci” was inspired by the Leeuwarden plea for European Capital of Culture 2018, for an open and dynamic genius of the city and its inhabitants, and the wish to connect individuals and communities together and to involve them in the artistic practices of artists, and in culture in general.
The goal of the project is to let artists meet with the population of Leeuwarden, so that they can trace the genius loci, to visualize it, and exhibit the results.
The project Genius loci follows the basic structure of the first phase; 3 weeks artist in residence at Grafisch Atelier Friesland in Leeuwarden, artist talks, meeting with local citizens and the final exhibition at Kunstruimte47 in Leeuwarden.
